About this place

Alappuzha Backwaters and Houseboats,Alappuzha Backwaters and HouseboatsAlappuzha is famous for its network of canals, lakes and lagoons, where traditional kettuvallam (rice boats) have been converted into comfortable houseboats. Tourists cruise through palm-fringed waterways, watching paddy fields, village life, churches and temples along the banks. The experience is slow, scenic and immersive, showcasing the unique water-based lifestyle of Kerala’s Kuttanad and backwater regions.

History & highlights

Historically, Alappuzha developed as a port and trading town under the Travancore rulers, particularly in the 18th–19th centuries, exporting coir, spices and other goods. The canal network and inland waterways were key transport routes before modern roads. As maritime trade shifted and bigger ports rose, Alleppey’s role as a major port declined. In the late 20th century, tourism promoters and local entrepreneurs transformed the traditional cargo boats into luxury houseboats, giving the town a new identity as the “Venice of the East” and a flagship of Kerala’s backwater tourism.
