Its importance for birds was recognised in the late 20th century, leading to the declaration of a bird sanctuary. As interest in eco-tourism and birdwatching grew, Kadalundi became known as one of Kerala’s key coastal bird habitats, highlighting the biodiversity of Malappuram–Kozhikode’s estuarine zone.
