Hill Palace Museum, Tripunithura

About this place

Hill Palace is a large complex on a hill in Tripunithura, once the residential and administrative headquarters of the Cochin royal family. Today it functions as a museum, with galleries displaying royal artefacts, jewellery, weapons, oil paintings, documents, and archaeological findings. The grounds include heritage buildings, lawns and a small deer park, offering a spacious, green heritage campus.

History & highlights

Built in the 19th century, Hill Palace served as the official residence of the Maharaja of Cochin and his administrative offices. After the integration of princely states and formation of Kerala, the royal family gradually moved out and the property was taken over by the state. It was later converted into an archaeological and heritage museum, preserving the memory of Cochin’s monarchy and their role in regional politics. Today, Hill Palace is considered Kerala’s largest archaeological museum, and a key place to understand the transformation from princely rule to modern statehood.
