India / Meghalaya

Mairang is a Khasi hills town that became significantly more prominent in recent administrative history after the creation of a new district. Today, it is the headquarters of Eastern West Khasi Hills district. Historically, the wider region formed part of larger Khasi hill administrative units, and towns like Mairang functioned as local centres for surrounding villages and markets.

A decisive milestone came in the 2020s. Eastern West Khasi Hills district was created by upgrading the erstwhile Mairang Civil Sub-Division. An official district profile notes that the district was created via a government notification dated 9 November 2021 and ceremonially inaugurated on 10 November 2021, making it the 12th district of Meghalaya, with Mairang as the headquarters.

With this change, Mairang’s role expanded from a regional town into a district-capital-style centre—hosting district offices, public administration, and services that previously required travel to older district hubs. This recent upgrade has shaped Mairang’s modern identity: still rooted in Khasi hill society, but now strongly defined by its district headquarters function and growing civic infrastructure.
