India / Meghalaya

Ampati is the district headquarters of South West Garo Hills and reflects the modern administrative reorganisation of Meghalaya’s western border region. The area has long been shaped by diverse communities—Garos (A’chiks) forming the larger population, along with Koch and Hajong communities in parts of the district.

Ampati’s importance grew through administrative upgrading. The district-level formation is a key milestone: South West Garo Hills was formed as a district on 7 August 2012, with Ampati as its headquarters. This creation strengthened local governance and services in a district that also has an international boundary with Bangladesh, making district administration and infrastructure development especially significant.

As a headquarters town, Ampati has developed district offices, public facilities, and civic infrastructure that support administration for surrounding blocks and border-area villages. Over time, Ampati has become the centre of public service delivery, local trade, and regional connectivity for South West Garo Hills—balancing traditional social life with the responsibilities of a modern district capital.
