Shillong Peak

About this place

Shillong Peak is a high viewpoint that gives a panoramic look over the city, surrounding ridges, and distant valleys. It’s especially popular at sunrise and late afternoon when clouds drift below the ridge line and the light changes quickly. The air here feels sharper and cooler than the city, and the viewpoint is a favourite for quick photography and “top-of-the-hills” moments. Visitors often combine it with nearby nature stops to make a complete Shillong day trip.

History & highlights

The peak has long held significance in local Khasi cultural landscapes and later gained wider visibility as Shillong developed as an important administrative hill station. As roads and viewpoints improved, Shillong Peak became a symbol of the city’s geography—helping people “read” the valley and understand why Shillong is called the Scotland-like hill city of the Northeast by many travellers.
