Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Temple

About this place

Simhachalam is one of Visakhapatnam’s most spiritually powerful and architecturally impressive temple visits. Set on a hill, the temple experience blends devotion with heritage—intricate carvings, pillared halls, a sacred ambiance, and panoramic surroundings that make the journey feel special even before darshan. Pilgrims and tourists come for blessings, festivals, and the unique tradition of the deity being covered in sandalwood paste for most of the year.

History & highlights

The temple’s recorded history spans close to a millennium, supported by hundreds of inscriptions (many being donation records) in Sanskrit and Telugu, reflecting sustained patronage over centuries. Historians commonly associate early recognition of the temple with inscriptions from the 11th century (including an inscription dated 1087 CE mentioned in epigraphic discussions), and later dynasties continued support and additions.
