Triveni Sangam

Triveni Sangam

About this place

Triveni Sangam is the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Sarasvati rivers at Prayagraj. Boats take pilgrims to the mid-stream point where the waters of the Ganga and the darker Yamuna can be seen meeting, and where devotees take holy dips, perform pind daan for ancestors, and do special pujas. The entire riverfront comes alive during large religious gatherings, with tents, akhadas, saints, pilgrims, and colourful flags lining the banks. The Sangam is considered one of the holiest places in Hinduism for bathing away sins and seeking spiritual upliftment.

History & highlights

The spiritual importance of the Sangam is recorded in ancient scriptures like the Puranas and the Mahabharata, which describe Prayag as the king of tirthas. For centuries it has hosted major religious assemblies, the most famous being the Kumbh Mela and Ardh Kumbh Mela, where millions gather in a carefully organised pilgrimage every few years. Historically, the area around the Sangam has seen many ruling dynasties—from ancient kingdoms to the Mughals and the British—who all recognised its significance. Even today, Kumbh organisation, pontoon bridges and temporary townships at the Sangam represent a unique blend of age-old ritual and modern logistics.
