The fort’s origins go back to the 17th century when Raja Bir Singh Deo of Orchha constructed the early structure as a strategic stronghold in Bundelkhand. Later, Jhansi became a princely state, and the fort evolved into the seat of power. In the mid-19th century, under British rule and the controversial Doctrine of Lapse, Jhansi was annexed, leading to the famous resistance of Rani Lakshmibai during the 1857 uprising. She used this fort as her base, and it witnessed fierce battles before finally falling. The story of the Rani’s courage turned Jhansi Fort into a national symbol of bravery, remembered in ballads, textbooks and patriotic retellings across India.
