Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum

About this place

This museum is the best place to understand Arunachal Pradesh beyond landscapes—through tribal lifestyle, clothing, jewellery, weapons, handicrafts, musical instruments, and archaeological finds. Visitors get a strong cultural overview in one place, which makes it perfect for travelers who want meaning and context before exploring valleys and monasteries across the state.

History & highlights

The museum was established in the late 1980s/around 1990 as the state’s main museum institution in Itanagar, and district sources note it was set up after shifting the earlier central museum collection from Shillong (dated 15 January 1990 in the district note). This shift reflects how the new state capital gradually built its own cultural institutions to document and preserve heritage.
