Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple (Mukteshwar Dham)

About this place

Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple.Mukteshwar is a quiet hill town in Nainital district known for its sweeping Himalayan views, deodar forests and the hilltop Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple sits at around 2,300 m above sea level and offers panoramic vistas of peaks on clear days, making it both a spiritual and scenic highlight. Around the temple, narrow village paths, orchards and forest trails create a relaxed, old-world atmosphere that contrasts sharply with more crowded hill stations.

History & highlights

Mukteshwar Temple is commonly described as about 350 years old, though local lore and some accounts trace its origins to much earlier periods, including legends linking it to the Katyuri kings (medieval rulers of these hills) and even to the Pandavas performing worship for mukti (liberation) during their exile. In the late 19th century, the British chose Mukteshwar as the site for the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), turning the area into an important research centre and hill-station retreat. Over time, colonial bungalows, orchards and forest estates grew around the old shrine. Today, Mukteshwar’s history is read in its mix of ancient temple devotion, British-era institutions and modern homestays and resorts, all perched on a ridge overlooking the high Himalaya.
