Neermahal

About this place

Neermahal is Tripura’s “palace on water”—a rare royal mansion rising from the middle of Rudrasagar Lake. The experience is cinematic: you approach by boat, watch the palace reflect on the water, and feel how architecture and nature blend into a single scene. The palace complex has a romantic, calm mood, and its lake setting makes it one of the most photogenic and memorable tourist spots in the state.

History & highlights

Neermahal was commissioned by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya in 1930 as a summer residence, inspired by a Mughal-style aesthetic while remaining rooted in local royal identity. Over time, it became a cultural symbol of Tripura’s late-kingdom era—showing how the monarchy expressed modernity and luxury through architecture. Today, it stands as a preserved heritage monument that tells the story of Tripura’s princely lifestyle just before and around the period when the kingdom transitioned into modern India.
