Khuri Sand Dunes and Village

Khuri Sand Dunes and Village

About this place

Khuri Sand Dunes is another dune area and village, roughly 45–50 km from Jaisalmer, often described as a quieter, more “raw” alternative to Sam. Here low mud houses, narrow lanes and grazing camels sit right next to sweeping sand dunes. Visitors usually stay in small desert camps or homestays, go for sunset camel or jeep rides, and then sleep under star-filled skies far from city lights. Evenings bring folk performances, traditional Rajasthani food and campfires, but on a smaller scale than Sam, so the overall vibe is more peaceful and village-oriented.

History & highlights

Khuri has long been a typical Thar desert village, with communities depending on livestock, limited agriculture and small-scale trade. Its sand dunes began attracting offbeat travellers and backpackers who wanted to avoid the crowds at Sam; gradually, local families and entrepreneurs started offering camel safaris and basic camping, then upgraded to more organised tented stays. Travel writers now describe Khuri as “less commercialised” and “more authentic,” and many operators market it that way, emphasising village walks, interaction with locals, and quieter dunes. This relatively recent tourism layer sits on top of centuries-old rural desert life, giving Khuri a dual identity as both working village and emerging eco-style desert retreat.
