Camel Research Centre Bikaner

About this place

NCamel Research Centre Bikaner (Camel Farm) Popularly called the Camel Farm, the ICAR-National Research Centre on Camel lies on the edge of Bikaner near Jorbeer. Visitors can see different camel breeds (Bikaneri, Jaisalmeri, Kachchhi, Mewari), learn how camels are bred and cared for, watch young camels at feeding time and, seasonally, try camel milk products like kulfi, coffee or lassi. Informational boards and a small museum explain the camel’s role in desert transport, defence, dairy and culture. It’s a very different kind of attraction—more educational and agricultural—yet it has become one of Bikaner’s signature experiences, especially during the Bikaner Camel Festival.

History & highlights

Recognising the camel’s importance for the arid and semi-arid regions of western India, the Government of India established a Project Directorate on Camel in Bikaner on 5 July 1984 under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). This was upgraded to the National Research Centre on Camel (NRCC) on 20 September 1995. The centre maintains an elite herd of 300+ camels, conducts research on camel health, genetics, nutrition and products, and promotes camel eco-tourism as one of its mandates. Through festivals, farm visits and outreach, NRCC has repositioned the camel not just as a fading beast of burden but as a key part of sustainable livelihoods and desert tourism in Rajasthan.
