Ganga Singh Museum (in Junagarh campus / city)

About this place

Ganga Singh Museum is widely considered one of the best museums in Rajasthan for serious history lovers. Its galleries display archaeological finds from the Indus Valley region around Rajasthan, coins, inscriptions, arms and armour, miniature paintings, textiles and artefacts that cover a time span from prehistoric to modern. Carefully curated sections on Bikaner’s royal house, local schools of painting and desert archaeology help visitors understand that the region’s history goes far beyond forts and palaces.

History & highlights

The museum was established in 1937 during the reign of Maharaja Ganga Singh as part of his efforts to modernise and document the history of his state. Initially housed within part of Junagarh Fort and later expanded, it brought together collections from royal stores, excavations and scholarly donations. After independence it became a state museum managed by the Rajasthan government, but it kept its original focus on serious scholarship—publishing catalogues, supporting research and building one of the region’s strongest holdings of Bikaner school miniatures and local archaeology.
