Savitri Mata Temple (Ratnagiri Hill)

Savitri Mata Temple (Ratnagiri Hill)

About this place

The Savitri Mata Temple sits high on Ratnagiri hill above Pushkar, directly opposite the Brahma Temple. From town you see its white and ochre buildings perched on the ridge; from the top you get one of the best views in Rajasthan – Pushkar Lake and town on one side, farms and desert plains on the other, with sunrise or sunset painting everything gold. Pilgrims can climb nearly 970 stone steps or use the ropeway, then circle the hilltop complex where shrines, flags and bells stand in the wind. Inside, idols of Savitri, Gayatri, Sharda and Saraswati are worshipped, linking the temple to the Brahma legend and to feminine power.

History & highlights

After cursing Brahma, the goddess Savitri is said to have withdrawn to Ratnagiri hill; a spring known as Savitri Jharna and her hilltop shrine preserve that mythological association. The temple’s exact foundation date is unclear, but it has been an important Shakti & sati site for centuries, with references in regional pilgrimage lists. The current structure is largely modern, with renovations and expansion in the 20th century and a ropeway inaugurated in 2016 to ease access for pilgrims, especially elderly visitors. Every year, special jagrans and fairs are held here in the month of Bhado, and for many pilgrims the traditional Pushkar circuit is: dip in the lake, worship at Brahma temple, then climb to Savitri to complete the vow.
