Purjan Vihar (Company Bagh)

Purjan Vihar (Company Bagh)

About this place

Purjan Vihar, still popularly called Company Bagh, is Alwar’s main historic garden and “green lung” near the city centre. It has broad lawns, tall shade trees, flower beds, walking paths, fountains and a small glasshouse; families use it for evening walks, picnics and kids’ playtime, and birdlife is abundant in the older trees. A charming pavilion nicknamed “Shimla” or the “summer house” sits inside the garden, giving elevated views over the greenery and making it feel like a mini hill-station corner in hot Alwar.

History & highlights

The garden was laid out in 1868 during the reign of Maharaja Shiv Dan Singh of Alwar as a formal public park. In 1885, Maharaja Mangal Singh added the “Shimla” summer house pavilion, enhancing its role as a cool retreat during scorching summers. Originally the park was named Company Garden / Company Bagh after Alwar’s alliance with the East India Company, but later Maharaja Jai Singh renamed it Purjan Vihar. Over 150+ years it has remained the city’s favourite everyday leisure space, contrasting with the more formal, royal areas around the palace and Moosi Chhatri.
