Sukh Mahal (Summer Palace by Jait Sagar Lake)

Sukh Mahal (Summer Palace by Jait Sagar Lake)

About this place

Sukh Mahal is a small, elegant two-storey palace on the bank of Jait Sagar Lake, just outside Bundi. Its cream walls, arched verandas and shady trees give it a peaceful, almost romantic feel. The building projects slightly over the water, and from its balconies you see the long narrow lake framed by hills and forests. Inside are simple rooms, some now converted into a small museum or rest spaces. The surrounding gardens and lakefront are good for walks and picnics, and the whole setting feels like a quiet retreat compared to the busy town lanes.

History & highlights

Sukh Mahal was built in the 18th–19th century as a summer retreat for the Bundi rulers, taking advantage of the cooler microclimate around Jait Sagar Lake. The Rajasthan tourism department notes that it later gained literary fame when Rudyard Kipling stayed here in the late 19th century while travelling in Rajputana; local lore claims that Sukh Mahal and Bundi inspired parts of his novel “Kim”, and a film adaptation even shot scenes here. Today the palace is under state tourism management; it has been used as a tourist bungalow and picnic spot, and Jait Sagar’s lakeside plus nearby Kshar Bagh (royal cenotaph garden) are promoted together as a heritage–nature circuit.
