Dundlod Fort and Village

Dundlod Fort and Village

About this place

Dundlod Fort & Village is a small village surrounded by fields, with a fort and havelis that feel more rural and quiet than Mandawa. The Dundlod Fort has a compact layout: a strong outer wall, inner courtyard, pillared halls, old furniture, weapons and portraits, some of it now part of a heritage hotel. Around the village are painted havelis and a stepwell; evenings are peaceful with village life—cattle, mud houses, small temples—contrasting with the aristocratic architecture of the fort.

History & highlights

Dundlod was founded as a Shekhawat thikana in 1742, ruled by Thakur Kesri (Keshri) Singh, a son of Thakur Sardul Singh of Jhunjhunu. The fort, dating from the mid-18th century, shows a blend of Rajput and Mughal styles – floral and foliage motifs, arches, minarets and painted panels. It remained a feudal seat into the 20th century; later, descendants converted it into a heritage hotel to sustain upkeep. Travel writers often mention Dundlod as a more authentic, less commercial experience of Shekhawati fort life, echoing the days when British officer James Tod wrote about Rajputana’s princely states.
