Gokul – Nand Bhawan / Chaurasi Khamba Temple

About this place

Gokul – Nand Bhawan. Gokul is a small town on the Yamuna’s eastern bank, known as the place where infant Krishna was brought secretly from Mathura and raised in safety. Its most visited shrine is Nand Bhawan (Chaurasi Khamba Temple) – a pillared courtyard structure supported by 84 pillars (chaurasi khamba), symbolising the 84 lakh species of life and the completeness of Krishna’s pastimes. Narrow streets, old houses and small ghats preserve an intimate, village-like sacred atmosphere that many visitors find more peaceful than the busy city temples.

History & highlights

According to the Bhagavata tradition, Vasudeva carried newborn Krishna across the flooded Yamuna from Kansa’s prison in Mathura to Gokul, where Nanda and Yashoda raised him. Over time, Gokul became one of the earliest centres of Krishna bhakti; several Vaishnava acharyas, including Vallabhacharya, had strong connections to the town. Nand Bhawan / Chaurasi Khamba Temple is celebrated in local lore as the house where Krishna’s childhood pranks took place. Modern development plans by the UP Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad list Gokul’s ghats and temple precincts as priority zones for conservation and pilgrim facilities.
