Nidhivan

Nidhivan

About this place

Nidhivan is a dense, mystical grove inside Vrindavan regarded as one of the holiest sites connected with Radha and Krishna’s nightly Raas Leela. The small, twisted trees—often identified with Tulsi—are said to be gopis in subtle form, and the entire grove feels like an enclosed natural temple. Devotees walk around the narrow paths, viewing small shrines, kunds and the Lalita and Radharani seats before exiting by evening. Local belief says that after sunset no human or animal should remain inside, as Krishna and the gopis still perform their secret pastimes there; this adds a strong aura of mystery and reverence for visitors.

History & highlights

Nidhivan is counted among the most important leela-sthals of Braj, and many saints—including Swami Haridas, the guru associated with Banke Bihari—are connected with this grove. Traditional accounts describe Nidhivan as the spot where Radha and Krishna’s maharaas took place, and where the divine couple still return at night. Over centuries, Goswami families and local Vaishnavas have maintained small shrines and ashrams around the grove, with strict rules that the area must be vacated after evening aarti. Modern environmental and tourism studies by the Uttar Pradesh government also recognise Nidhivan as a sensitive sacred landscape within Vrindavan’s heritage zone, leading to efforts to manage crowds while preserving its unique character.
