Ambikapur is among the oldest and most historically rooted towns of northern Chhattisgarh, serving for centuries as a religious and administrative centre in the Surguja region. Local heritage accounts note that the wider Surguja belt shows evidence of very early settlement through ancient remains—temples, stone carvings, and other archaic traces—indicating human activity here long before the early historic period.

The town’s identity is closely tied to Shakti worship. District cultural records explain that Ambikapur’s name is associated with Ambika (Mahamaya) Devi, with the ancient Mahamaya Devi temple regarded as a central landmark of faith for the area. The same district source also connects the naming of the district headquarters with Mahamaya/Ambika Devi, showing how religion shaped the town’s very title and public life.

Historically, Ambikapur gained major political prominence as the capital of Surguja State, a princely state that existed during the era of British paramountcy. Standard historical summaries describe Surguja State as beginning in the early 17th century (often dated to 1613) and lasting until its accession to independent India in 1948, with Ambikapur as its capital. This capital status meant that governance, revenue administration, and royal patronage naturally concentrated in and around Ambikapur, encouraging the growth of markets, artisan activity, and civic institutions alongside older village networks.

Under the British Raj, Surguja State’s administrative alignment shifted within the agency system (sources note placements under Central India Agency and later transfer to the Eastern States Agency), reflecting the broader restructuring of princely territories in central and eastern India. Even as colonial frameworks expanded, the region retained a distinctive social fabric, shaped by forest landscapes and a strong tribal presence across Surguja.

After 1947–48, with the merger of the princely state into the Indian Union, Ambikapur continued as the district headquarters and later also became the divisional headquarters for the Surguja division, reinforcing its administrative importance in modern Chhattisgarh. Today, Ambikapur’s history is visible in its continuing temple traditions, its remembered princely-capital past, and its role as a key northern Chhattisgarh hub—where faith, forests, and governance have interacted for generations.
