India / Meghalaya

Baghmara is the principal town and headquarters of South Garo Hills district in Meghalaya. The wider South Garo Hills region is traditionally associated with Garo (A’chik) communities and a strong landscape identity—forested hills, river systems, and borderland connectivity that historically shaped movement, trade, and settlement patterns. The Simsang River (also known as Someshwari) is closely linked to the local geography of the area around Baghmara and remains a key feature in how the region is described.

A major modern milestone in Baghmara’s administrative history is the creation of the district itself. South Garo Hills district was created on 18 June 1992, with Baghmara as its headquarters, making the town the focal point for district-level governance and public services. As the district headquarters, Baghmara developed essential administrative offices, public infrastructure, and market activity serving nearby rural blocks and border-adjacent communities.

In recent decades, the district has also gained wider recognition for nearby natural attractions and protected areas, supporting a growing interest in eco-tourism and nature-based travel in the South Garo Hills
