India / Uttarakhand

Chakrata is a serene hill station located in the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand, known for its military heritage, natural beauty, and colonial-era charm. Historically, Chakrata was part of the ancient Jaunsar-Bawar region, home to indigenous tribal communities with unique cultural traditions. For centuries, the area remained under the rule of the Garhwal Kingdom, governed by the Panwar dynasty.

In the early 19th century, the region came under British control following the Anglo-Gorkha War (1814–1816). Recognizing its strategic location and pleasant climate, the British established a cantonment in Chakrata in 1866. It soon became a popular summer retreat for British officers and an important military base. Many colonial buildings and pathways from that time still influence the town’s landscape.

Chakrata later became home to one of India’s most elite military units—the Special Frontier Force (SFF)—which further strengthened its identity as a restricted and high-security zone.

After India’s independence, Chakrata continued to serve as a significant military hub while also emerging as a peaceful travel destination. Today, it is admired for its dense forests, Tiger Falls, Deoban, and breathtaking Himalayan views, making it a perfect blend of history, nature, and military legacy.
