Devprayag is one of the most sacred and historically significant towns of Uttarakhand, located in the Tehri Garhwal district. It is famous as the holy confluence where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers meet to form the river Ganga. From ancient times, Devprayag has been regarded as a powerful spiritual center and an important pilgrimage destination.
According to Hindu scriptures, Sage Dev Sharma performed intense penance at this place, and it is from his name that Devprayag derived its identity. The town is closely linked with Lord Rama, who is believed to have performed penance here after defeating Ravana. The ancient Raghunath Temple, dedicated to Lord Rama, stands as a symbol of this sacred connection and attracts pilgrims throughout the year.
Devprayag also played a role in the administration of the Garhwal Kingdom under the Panwar dynasty. Due to its strategic location on hill routes and river trade paths, it remained an important religious and cultural hub for centuries. During the British period, the region became part of Tehri State.
After India’s independence, Devprayag became part of Uttarakhand and continues to hold immense religious importance. Today, it is known as the divine birthplace of the Ganga and a symbol of spiritual unity.
