Haldwani is one of the largest and most important cities of Uttarakhand, located in the Nainital district. Its history is closely linked with the Kumaon region and the ancient trade routes that connected the Himalayan foothills with the high mountain valleys. The name Haldwani comes from the “Haldu” tree (Adina cordifolia), which once grew abundantly in the region.

For centuries, the area remained a forested land inhabited mainly by local Kumaoni communities and used as a winter settlement by people from nearby hills. During the Chand dynasty rule in Kumaon (10th–18th century), the region slowly developed as a trading stop due to its location near the plains.

In 1803, the Gorkhas captured Kumaon, including Haldwani. After the Anglo-Gorkha War (1814–1816), the British took control and began developing Haldwani as a major administrative and commercial center. The construction of the railway line in 1884 transformed the town into a gateway between the hills of Kumaon and the plains of North India.

Post-independence, Haldwani rapidly expanded in trade, education, and transportation. Today, it is known as the “Gateway to Kumaon”, serving as a major hub for business, tourism, and cultural exchange in Uttarakhand.
