India / Uttarakhand

The Himalayas are not a city, but the world’s youngest and highest mountain range, stretching across India, Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, and Pakistan. Their history is both geological and cultural, shaping the civilizations of South Asia for thousands of years.

Geologically, the Himalayas were formed around 50–55 million years ago, when the Indian Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate, forcing the land upward to create towering peaks like Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga. They are still rising today due to ongoing tectonic movement.

Culturally, the Himalayas hold an immense place in Indian civilization. Ancient scriptures—including the Vedas, Puranas, Ramayana, and Mahabharata—describe the Himalayas as the abode of gods, sages, and yogis. Mount Kailash is considered the sacred home of Lord Shiva, while rivers born in the Himalayas—Ganga, Yamuna, Brahmaputra, Sutlej—sustain millions of lives.

Throughout history, the region has hosted hermitages, Buddhist monasteries, and kingdoms such as Kumaon, Garhwal, Ladakh, Sikkim, and Nepal. It also served as trade routes like the Silk Route and pathways for cultural exchange between India and Central Asia.

In modern times, the Himalayas are admired for their biodiversity, pilgrimage centres, and mountaineering heritage. They remain a symbol of spirituality, natural beauty, and ancient Indian tradition.
