Jharsuguda

Jharsuguda’s history is closely tied to western Odisha’s role as a crossroads between the coastal plain, the central Indian plateau, and the mineral-rich belts of the east. For centuries this region was primarily a landscape of forests, seasonal rivers, and village-based agrarian life, connected by old routes that linked the Sambalpur–Bargarh hinterland with what is now Chhattisgarh. In colonial-era reorganization of the “garhjat” and adjoining areas, Jharsuguda became part of Sambalpur district in 1936—an administrative arrangement that shaped its early modern governance and revenue systems.

The most decisive engine of modern growth, however, was the railway. Jharsuguda railway station came into existence with the opening of the Nagpur–Asansol main line of the Bengal Nagpur Railway in 1891, and it later became part of the strategic Howrah–Nagpur–Mumbai trunk route, turning Jharsuguda into an important junction for movement of people and goods. This rail connectivity did more than connect towns—it also unlocked the region’s mineral economy. Around 1900, coal was reportedly discovered in the Ib River valley during railway bridge work, and by 1909 the first coalmine in the Ib Valley coalfield had been established, laying the foundation for a century of industrial change.

Over the 20th century, the Ib Valley coalfield and related industries steadily expanded, and Jharsuguda’s identity shifted from a small administrative and market settlement to a resource-and-logistics hub. The coalfield itself is explicitly located in Jharsuguda district, and its development over time—especially after nationalization of coal and the rise of opencast mining—helped shape local employment, migration, and the growth of nearby industrial townships.

A major administrative milestone arrived in the 1990s. Jharsuguda was carved out of Sambalpur and made a separate district with effect from 1 January 1994, as recorded in Odisha government RTI materials (including the Revenue Department notification reference). Some local records also cite an April 1994 “coming into existence,” which is often understood as reflecting operational/administrative roll-out, but the official effective date is widely documented as 1.1.1994.

In the 21st century, connectivity again reshaped Jharsuguda—this time by air. The area had an airstrip associated with World War II, and the modern airport terminal was inaugurated in September 2018, giving western Odisha a faster link to major cities and strengthening Jharsuguda’s role as a regional gateway for industry, trade, and travel.
