Kaithal is a historic city of Haryana with roots that go back to ancient Indian civilization. It is believed that Kaithal was originally known as Kapishthal, a place associated with Lord Hanuman during the time of the Mahabharata. This gives the city a strong mythological importance. Over the centuries, Kaithal remained an important center of culture, trade, and administration in northern India.

During the medieval period, Kaithal came under the rule of the Delhi Sultanate and later the Mughal Empire. Due to its strategic location between Delhi and Punjab, it became an important military outpost. In the 18th century, Kaithal was controlled by Bhagmal of Patiala, and later it became a princely state under Sikh rule.

Kaithal played a significant role in the Indian Revolt of 1857, when the local ruler Rao Tula Ram’s allies and local warriors challenged British authority. After the revolt, the British took direct control of the region.

After independence in 1947, Kaithal became part of Punjab and later joined Haryana in 1966. In 1989, it was declared a separate district. Today, Kaithal is known for its agriculture, education, and cultural heritage.
