India / Mizoram

Kolasib is a northern Mizoram town that has long been important as the state’s “gateway” toward Assam, sitting on the main road corridor that links Mizoram with Silchar and the rest of India. Its modern administrative story began in the mid-20th century: on 2 October 1957, Kolasib was developed as the centre of a Tribal Development Block, initially managed by a Project Executive Officer and later by an Area Administrative Officer. After Mizoram became a Union Territory in 1972, Kolasib’s role expanded further, and on 5 May 1975 it was upgraded as the headquarters of a Sub-Division under a Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil).

A major milestone came in 1998 when Kolasib District was created by bifurcating the then Aizawl District, with Kolasib town made the administrative headquarters. Over time, surrounding areas were organized into additional civil sub-divisions such as Kawnpui and Vairengte, strengthening governance closer to remote settlements. Today, Kolasib continues to grow as a district hub for administration, education, markets, and transport—while its hill scenery, rivers, and nearby lakes also shape its identity in contemporary Mizoram.
