Mahendragarh is a historically important district of southern Haryana, known for its rich cultural heritage and role in India’s freedom struggle. The region was earlier known as Kanaud, and the town of Mahendragarh developed around a fort built in the 18th century by rulers of the Patiala State. Later, the town was renamed Mahendragarh in honor of Maharaja Mahendra Singh of Patiala, under whose influence the area grew in importance.
Historically, the Mahendragarh region formed part of the wider Narnaul–Mewat belt, which has ancient roots linked to Rajput and Ahir kingdoms. Nearby Narnaul is especially famous for the Battle of Narnaul (1581) fought between the Mughal forces of Akbar and his half-brother Mirza Hakim. The area also produced one of the bravest freedom fighters of 1857, Rao Tula Ram of Rewari–Narnaul, who led a strong rebellion against British rule.
During the British period, Mahendragarh became a separate district in 1861. After India’s independence, it remained part of Punjab until the formation of Haryana in 1966. Today, Mahendragarh is known for its educational institutions, rural culture, and historical legacy.
