Paradeep

Paradeep (also spelled Paradip) is a coastal town in Odisha, best known for the deep-water port that transformed it from a small fishing and river-mouth settlement into one of India’s most important maritime gateways. The town sits close to the meeting of the Mahanadi River system and the Bay of Bengal in Jagatsinghpur, a location that has long been valuable for coastal navigation, fishing, and access to Odisha’s mineral and agricultural hinterland.

The “modern” history of Paradeep is strongly tied to post-Independence port planning. Odisha’s leadership pushed for a major harbour on this coast to support industrial growth and exports; sources commonly credit Biju Patnaik as a key driving force behind the project idea. In the early years after 1947, a smaller port activity existed in the area, and planning expanded toward building a full major port that could handle large vessels and bulk cargo.

A decisive milestone came when Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone of Paradip Port on 3 January 1962, marking the start of large-scale construction for what would become a major national harbour. Administrative control soon shifted as the project moved into its operational phase: the Government of India took over management from the Government of Odisha on 1 June 1965.

The port’s first major operational moment is carefully recorded in port histories. On 12 March 1966, the port saw its maiden berthing (often noted as INS Investigator), and the port was formally declared open the same day by Peter Stambolić. Shortly after, on 18 April 1966, the Government of India declared Paradip as the eighth major port of India, a step often highlighted as making it the first major port commissioned on India’s east coast after Independence. This recognition anchored Paradeep’s growth: a major port brings steady jobs, housing colonies, markets, schools, and transport links—turning a coastal settlement into a structured port-town.

Over the following decades, Paradeep expanded alongside the port’s rising cargo role. The harbour’s capacity and berth infrastructure grew to handle large bulk carriers and diverse cargo streams, strengthening the town’s identity as an industrial and logistics hub of coastal Odisha.

Paradeep’s history also includes the hard lessons of cyclones on the Bay of Bengal coast. During the 1999 Odisha Super Cyclone, the storm surge devastated the Paradeep area; accounts note evacuations of ships from Paradip Port and substantial damage in and around the port town. The post-1999 period therefore added a new chapter focused on disaster preparedness, stronger coastal infrastructure, and safer port operations—an ongoing theme for a town whose fortunes are inseparable from the sea.
