India / Uttar Pradesh

Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad), in southern Uttar Pradesh, is one of India’s oldest and holiest cities, with a history spanning thousands of years. Its ancient name Prayag means “place of offerings,” referring to the Sangam, the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the invisible Saraswati. It is revered in the Vedas, Puranas, and epics, and has long been a major centre for pilgrimage, especially during the Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious gathering.

The region was part of powerful ancient kingdoms such as the Kosala, Kuru and later the Mauryan and Gupta Empires. Under Emperor Akbar, the city gained political prominence when he founded the fort city of Ilahabas in 1583, later known as Allahabad. The Allahabad Fort, with its iconic Ashokan pillar, became a key Mughal stronghold.

During British rule, Allahabad became an administrative and educational hub, home to institutions like Allahabad University (1887) and the High Court of Judicature. It also played a vital role in the freedom movement, with leaders such as Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Motilal Nehru, and Indira Gandhi closely linked to the city’s historic Anand Bhawan.

In 2018, Allahabad was officially renamed Prayagraj, restoring its ancient, sacred identity. Today, it remains a vibrant centre of culture, spirituality, education and history.
