Rayagada’s history is a blend of ancient hill-country past, tribal cultural continuity, and a modern administrative rise that made it one of southern Odisha’s key district headquarters. The region lies in the rugged Eastern Ghats zone—an area where settlement patterns were shaped by forests, rivers, and hill routes rather than large early cities. Even so, official profiles emphasize that Rayagada has “long and glorious historical records,” pointing to finds like copper plates, rock inscriptions, and coins that suggest the area stayed connected to wider political and trade networks across different ages.
In many broad historical narratives of Odisha, this belt is linked with the larger cultural space of Kalinga, which came under Mauryan influence in the 3rd century BCE after the famous Kalinga War, and later passed through multiple regional dynasties. While such empires were usually centered elsewhere, Rayagada’s landscape would have mattered as a corridor between the coast and the interior highlands.
A key medieval/early modern layer of Rayagada’s town history is associated with the Nandapur–Jeypore royal line in the Koraput region. Many summaries state that Rayagada town was founded by Vishwanath Dev Gajapati in the 16th century and that a fort and temple line developed along the Nagavali River, including the famed **Majhighariani Temple, regarded locally as a guardian deity. Local traditions and travel notes also connect the temple’s story to placement within/near an old palace complex, reinforcing how royalty, settlement, and worship grew together in the town’s memory.
Under the British Raj, the Rayagada area was part of the larger “undivided Koraput” administrative world and remained linked with the **Jeypore estate/kingdom until the transition around 1947–48. After Independence, Rayagada continued within Koraput district for decades, while its town grew gradually as a market-and-service center for surrounding blocks.
The biggest modern turning point came with district formation. Rayagada district was created on 2 October 1992, carved out of **Koraput district as part of Odisha’s district-expansion plan, and Rayagada town became the headquarters. This shift mattered practically: district status brings collectorate-level offices, planning institutions, and public-service delivery closer to remote hill communities.
Rayagada’s social history is also deeply shaped by its predominantly tribal population—especially the Khonds (Kondh) and Soras (Saora)—with local languages such as Kui and Sora spoken alongside Odia. Finally, connectivity strengthened Rayagada’s modern role: its railway junction (RGDA) became a major link for southern Odisha, helping the headquarters function as a gateway between the interior hills and larger urban markets.
