India / Tripura

Sabroom is one of Tripura’s most strategically placed towns, located in the South Tripura district on the banks of the Feni River, right at the India–Bangladesh border. Its history is shaped less by “ancient dynasties” and more by border geography, migration, and modern connectivity projects that turned a small riverside settlement into an important gateway town.

For generations, the Sabroom area grew around agriculture, riverine trade, and local markets serving nearby villages. Because the town sits at the edge of Tripura, it naturally became a meeting point for movement of people and goods. A major social chapter is linked to the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, when (as commonly noted in reference summaries) Hindu families from parts of present-day Bangladesh migrated toward safer border towns such as Sabroom, adding new neighborhoods, livelihoods, and cultural links across the border landscape.

Administratively, Sabroom’s importance expanded as Tripura’s district and subdivision structure matured. Today, Sabroom is officially a Nagar Panchayat town in South Tripura and also gives its name to one of the district’s three subdivisions (Belonia, Sabroom, and Santirbazar), reflecting its role as a local governance hub. This made Sabroom a center for offices, public services, and coordination for surrounding blocks such as Satchand, Rupaichari, and Poangbari.

In recent decades, Sabroom’s “modern history” has been transformed by connectivity. The Lumding–Sabroom railway section ultimately brought rail up to the border: the final stretch to Sabroom was completed and became operational on 3 October 2019, linking the town directly into the broader Northeast rail network. Even more symbolic was the opening of Maitri Setu, a 1.9 km bridge over the Feni River connecting Sabroom (India) with Ramgarh (Bangladesh), inaugurated on 9 March 2021.

Today, Sabroom’s identity stands at the crossroads of border culture and infrastructure-led change—known as Tripura’s southern gateway, shaped by migration memory, administrative growth, and the promise of deeper cross-border connectivity.
