City
Sasaram is a historic city of Bihar and the headquarters of Rohtas district. Its best-known phase is linked to the 16th-century Sur Empire: Sasaram is closely associated with Emperor Sher Shah Suri, and sources note that the city served as the capital of the Sur dynasty during his rule. After Sher Shah Suri died in 1545, a grand mausoleum was built for him in Sasaram—today famous as the Tomb of Sher Shah Suri, set within a large tank and considered a masterpiece of Indo-Islamic architecture.
In the colonial era, Sasaram grew as an administrative and market town of the old Shahabad region. Local civic administration was organized when Sasaram municipality was formed in 1869, beginning with a small ward structure that later expanded with the town’s growth. Over time, Sasaram developed stronger transport links (including Sasaram Junction) and became a service hub for surrounding agricultural areas.
Today, Sasaram remains an important district headquarters city, where its medieval legacy—especially Sher Shah’s monument—sits alongside modern offices, education, and trade that connect rural Rohtas with the wider Ganga–Son plain.
