Somnath
Somnath, near Veraval, is home to one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva and holds deep significance in Hindu tradition. The present Somnath Temple, rebuilt in majestic style by the sea, symbolises resilience after repeated destructions through history. The temple complex faces the Arabian Sea, and standing on the promenade listening to the waves and temple bells together is a memorable experience. Veraval town nearby retains glimpses of its fishing harbour and old Nawabi architecture. Travellers often visit other spots along the coast such as Triveni Sangam, Bhalka Tirth and Prabhas Patan museums. Evening aarti at Somnath, followed by a quiet walk along the lit seafront, is a highlight for many visitors. Somnath also serves as a base for those travelling onwards to Gir National Park, Diu or Junagadh. Well-connected by rail and road, it fits easily into Saurashtra itineraries that combine pilgrimage with wildlife, beaches and heritage cities.
