India / Uttarakhand

Tehri Garhwal is a historic and scenic region of Uttarakhand, known for its royal heritage, spiritual importance, and natural beauty. Its history dates back to the early medieval period when the region was ruled by the Panwar dynasty, which established the Garhwal Kingdom around the 9th century. King Kanak Pal is regarded as the founder of this dynasty. For centuries, Tehri served as the royal capital of the Garhwal rulers, and the kingdom remained independent until the British period.

The region played a significant role in protecting Himalayan culture and trade routes. During the Anglo-Gorkha War (1814–1816), parts of Garhwal were affected, after which eastern Garhwal came under British control, while Tehri remained a princely state. The last king of Tehri, Manabendra Shah, merged the princely state with independent India in 1949.

Tehri gained national attention with the construction of the Tehri Dam, one of the tallest dams in the world, leading to the creation of New Tehri town. Today, Tehri Garhwal is known for its rich cultural traditions, sacred rivers like the Bhagirathi, adventure tourism, and its important role in Uttarakhand’s development.
