Vadodara (Baroda)

Vadodara, earlier known as Baroda, is often called the cultural capital of Gujarat. Once the seat of the Gaekwad rulers, it still carries a strong royal imprint in its palaces, museums and gardens. The star attraction is Lakshmi Vilas Palace, an impressive Indo-Saracenic residence that is reputed to be several times the size of Buckingham Palace. The palace museum, armoury and Darbar Hall allow visitors a glimpse into the opulent life of Baroda’s royals. The city also houses the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum, Sayaji Baug with its zoo and toy train, and Kirti Mandir memorial. Vadodara is known for its vibrant Navratri celebrations, art galleries and a strong performing arts culture, supported by MS University. Modern cafés, shopping areas and riverfront promenades make it a comfortable city for longer stays. Thanks to its central location and good rail/road connections, Vadodara works well as a base for day trips to Champaner–Pavagadh Archaeological Park (UNESCO site), Narmada/Ekta Nagar for Statue of Unity, and nearby temple towns.
