India / Haryana

Yamunanagar, in southeastern Haryana, is a relatively young district with roots that connect ancient trade routes, colonial forestry, and modern industry. Earlier, the area formed part of the historic town of Jagadhri, known since Mughal and British times for its high-quality brass and copper metalwork and traditional utensil industry. With Partition in 1947, a large influx of refugees from West Punjab settled here; new colonies, markets and workshops rapidly expanded the urban area. In the 1950s, as the Indian government focused on planned industrialisation, Yamunanagar emerged as a key centre for timber and plywood thanks to its proximity to Shivalik forests and river transport along the Yamuna. Large paper and sugar mills, metal factories and engineering units followed, transforming it into an important industrial hub of Haryana. Administratively, Yamunanagar district was carved out of Ambala in 1989, with Yamunanagar–Jagadhri forming the twin-city headquarters. Today the region is also known for Kalesar National Park, the Kapal Mochan tirtha, and the Hathni Kund barrage, which replaced the old Tajewala headworks. Together, these layers—craft traditions, refugee resettlement, industrial growth and ecological assets—shape Yamunanagar’s distinct historical identity in modern Haryana.
