Aji Dam

Aji Dam

About this place

Aji Dam is an earthen dam built on the Aji River, one of Saurashtra’s main rivers and a lifeline for Rajkot. Located about 8 km from the city, it forms a wide reservoir that provides drinking and irrigation water and doubles as a scenic escape. The dam area has gardens, children’s play zones and open spaces where locals enjoy picnics, evening walks and monsoon views. In the rainy season, overflow from the dam and the surrounding greenery make it a favourite photography and hang-out spot.

History & highlights

The Aji River separates Rajkot into east and west, and a series of four dams were built on it to support agriculture and urban water supply. Aji Dam near Rajkot is one of the major Saurashtra dams, developed in the mid-20th century as the city expanded. Over the decades it has become both a critical water-resource structure and a local attraction, with gardens and recreation facilities added to encourage public use of the waterfront.
