Alchi Monastery is a small village beside the Indus, famous for its monastic complex hidden among trees instead of being on a hilltop. The temples are low, simple buildings from outside, but inside the walls are fully covered with detailed paintings of Buddhas, bodhisattvas and mandalas, along with old clay statues. The atmosphere is very calm and intimate, and the village lanes add to the feeling of a sacred, artistic pocket in the valley.

Alchi’s temples are among the oldest Buddhist monuments in Ladakh, dating to around the 11th–12th centuries. They are linked to great translators like Rinchen Zangpo and Kashmiri artists, showing a mix of Indian and Tibetan art styles. Unlike fortress monasteries built later, Alchi was created mainly as an artistic and ritual centre. When political focus moved elsewhere, Alchi became a quiet village, which actually helped its paintings survive. Today it is one of the most important sites for early Himalayan Buddhist art.
