Amarnath Yatra Base,Pahalgam is one of the main traditional starting points of the Amarnath Yatra, the pilgrimage to the high-altitude Amarnath cave where a natural ice lingam of Shiva is worshipped. Yatris proceed via Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panchtarni on foot or pony, passing glaciers and high passes.
About this place
History & highlights
The Amarnath cave has been revered for centuries, with folk histories speaking of shepherds and saints rediscovering the cave and its ice lingam. Over time the route via Pahalgam settled as a key access track, and the town became the assembly point where pilgrims rested, hired porters and ponies, and bought supplies. Modern organised yatra systems, security and temporary camps have made the route safer but the core experience remains a tough mountain pilgrimage rooted in older Kashmiri Shaivite traditions.
