Ananthapura Lake Temple

Ananthapura Lake Temple

About this place

Ananthapura Lake Temple is a unique Vishnu shrine set in the middle of a rectangular lake, accessible by a small bridge. Surrounded by water, with simple but beautiful Kerala-style structures, it feels peaceful and slightly otherworldly. The temple is also famous for the resident vegetarian “guardian” crocodile in the lake, adding to its local lore.

History & highlights

Considered the only lake temple in Kerala, Ananthapura is traditionally regarded as the original seat of Ananthapadmanabha, linked spiritually to the Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. The shrine is centuries old, patronised by local chieftains and devotees from both Kerala and coastal Karnataka. Over time, legends about the guardian crocodile and the link to southern Kerala’s main Vishnu temple strengthened its sacred status. Today it stands as an important Vaishnavite shrine and a distinctive heritage spot in Kasaragod’s rural landscape.
