History & highlights

The temple is centuries old and closely associated with the Travancore royal family and Kerala’s temple boat race traditions. Aranmula was historically a Brahmin and artisan settlement, known also for its metal mirrors (Aranmula kannadi) crafted using a secret alloy technique. Its festivals and boat race on the Pamba evolved as key events in Kerala’s ritual calendar. Today, Aranmula represents a blend of heritage village, temple culture and river-based festival traditions.
