Ashtamudi Lake and Kollam Backwaters

About this place

Ashtamudi Lake And Kollam Backwaters,Ashtamudi Lake is a large, palm-fringed water body with multiple arms reaching into Kollam town and surrounding villages. Houseboats, ferries and resorts line its edges, and it serves as a gateway to the backwaters northwards. Visitors enjoy cruises, sunset views and serene stays by the water, often combined with beach and temple visits nearby.

History & highlights

Kollam (Quilon) has been a major port and trading town since ancient times, known in Roman, Arab and Chinese records for its pepper and spices. Ashtamudi Lake and the nearby coast gave it a natural harbour and inland water connection. Under Travancore and later the British, Kollam remained an important trading and administrative centre. The backwaters, once mainly for transport and fishing, were repurposed in the late 20th century as part of Kerala’s backwater tourism circuit, with Ashtamudi emerging as a quieter alternative to Alappuzha.
