Barsana – Shri Radha Rani Temple

Barsana – Shri Radha Rani Temple

About this place

Barsana is a hill town in Mathura district, revered as the birthplace of Goddess Radha. On top of Bhanugarh Hill stands Shri Radha Rani Temple (Shreeji Mandir), a grand red-sandstone complex with long stairways, courtyards and richly ornamented halls. From the temple, visitors get sweeping views of hills and the town below. Barsana is also famous for its Lathmar Holi, when women playfully “beat” men with sticks in a colourful re-enactment of Radha–Krishna’s teasing.

History & highlights

Tradition holds that an original shrine here was established by Vajranabh, Krishna’s great-grandson, making Barsana an ancient Radha-tirtha. The present temple form goes back to a 17th-century reconstruction, attributed to Narayan Bhatt and Raja Bir Singh Deo, with later expansions under local patrons. The town itself has developed as a dedicated Radha-dham, with related sites like Rangeeli Mahal and Kirti Mandir (showing baby Radha in her mother’s lap) created in the late 20th and early 21st century by Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat. Today, Barsana is firmly integrated into the modern Braj pilgrimage and tourism circuit alongside Mathura and Vrindavan.
