Barton Museum And Library

About this place

Barton Museum and Library is one of the oldest and most respected libraries in Gujarat, standing in the central part of Bhavnagar. Architecturally, it’s a handsome 19th-century heritage building, with high ceilings and old-world charm that instantly tells you this was a serious intellectual hub. Inside, it houses thousands of books, including rich Gujarati collections and historical material that scholars still use. For visitors, it offers a quiet break from the streets and a feel of Bhavnagar’s cultural life beyond temples and lakes. You can combine a quick exterior photo-stop for the heritage façade with an indoor exploration if you’re interested in literature, history or old public institutions that shaped the city.

History & highlights

Reading culture in Bhavnagar began with Chhaganbhai Desai Library around 1860, and Barton Library was formally inaugurated later in 1882 by Maharaja Takhtsinhji Gohil, named after the British political agent Colonel L. C. Barton. Since then, it has grown into a major repository of Gujarati books and an important cultural institution for Saurashtra, continuously functioning as a public library and research space into the present day.
