Basgo Fort and Monastery

Basgo Fort and Monastery

About this place

Basgo Fort and Monastery, appears dramatically above the Indus as ruined forts and temples perched on soft mud cliffs. Climbing up through narrow paths, you enter old chapels with statues and faded murals, and then reach terraces with wide views of the river and desert hills. The village and green fields lie below, giving a strong contrast between life in the valley and the ancient, half-ruined fortress above.

History & highlights

Between the 15th and 17th centuries, Basgo was a major political and military stronghold of the Ladakhi kings. The fort and temples were built to control this part of the Indus valley and to resist enemies during internal conflicts and outside attacks. Important royal events took place here. Later, when the kingdom stabilised and the main focus stayed in Leh, Basgo’s strategic role declined and the structures decayed, leaving atmospheric ruins that still show its past importance.
