About this place
History & highlights
The fort dates back to at least the 13th century, associated with the Rattas and later Adil Shahi rulers of Bijapur. Over time it changed hands between local dynasties, the Deccan sultanates, Marathas and eventually the British. Kamal Basti was built under Jain patronage and is a key example of medieval Jain architecture. Under British rule, Belagavi became a cantonment town. The fort’s history encapsulates Belagavi’s role as a border crossroads between Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa.
